Coffin of Duke Christian (d. 1736)

The impressive coffin is made of tin and has beautiful raised ornamentation. The two figures seated at the head personify the “magnanimous ruler” (pater patriae) and “true faith” (religio). Visible behind them is a tablet with the prince’s monogram. The haloed figure of Nike, goddess of victory, points to heaven, to which the soul of the deceased duke ascends.

The duke’s magnificent sarcophagus is contrasted by the simple wooden coffin next to it. It contains the remains of his wife, the Duchess Louise Christine (d. 1738).
