Coffin of Duke August (d. 1680)

Duke August, who built the palace and founded the princely house of Weissenfels, rests in a chest-shaped coffin with gilded ornamentation. The name “Augustus” is inscribed in capital letters on the side. The inverted bishop’s miters on the lid tells us that the coffin contains the remains of the last ruler of the Archbishopric of Magdeburg, founded in 968.
